Dog Friendly Atlanta

Atlanta is a strong choice for dog owners, built around the BeltLine walking loop, big green parks and an easygoing patio culture. Piedmont Park and the Old Fourth Ward give you off-leash space close to downtown, and Stone Mountain and the Chattahoochee trails make easy day trips. As with most US cities, indoor dining is service animals only, and Atlanta's summer humidity means early or late walks are kinder on your dog.

On MARTA trains, buses and the Atlanta Streetcar, only service animals that assist a person with a disability may ride uncontained. Any other dog must be carried in a secure rigid pet carrier with a lock or latch it cannot escape, and it stays in the carrier for the whole trip. There is no extra fare, so a small dog in a proper carrier travels free alongside you.

Off-leash time is limited to the city's designated fenced dog parks, with Piedmont Park and South Bend Park named in the city ordinance, plus community run spaces like Freedom Barkway in the Old Fourth Ward. Everywhere else, including the BeltLine and all other parks, dogs must stay on a leash of six feet or less. Stepping outside those fenced areas off leash can bring a fine.

Piedmont Park Dog Park is the headline spot, around three fenced acres near downtown with a separate small dog section, shade, water spigots and boulders to climb. Freedom Barkway offers roughly two open acres in the Old Fourth Ward with large and small dog sides, open daily until late. For something different, Fetch Park pairs a fenced off-leash yard with a bar and on-site attendants near the BeltLine.

Indoors, only service animals are allowed under Georgia health rules. Georgia's statewide rule lets restaurants welcome dogs in outdoor dining areas with the right signage and a separate outside entrance, but Fulton County, which covers much of Atlanta, is carved out and sets its own local approach. Plenty of Atlanta patios and breweries still welcome leashed dogs, so it is worth checking the individual venue before you go.

The BeltLine's Eastside Trail is the classic dog walk, linking neighborhoods, murals and patio stops. Add the open lawns of Centennial Olympic Park, a wander through the historic grounds of Oakland Cemetery, and cooling paw dips along the Chattahoochee River trails. Round it off at Fetch Park or a dog welcoming patio at The Battery near the ballpark. Keep dogs leashed throughout except inside the fenced dog parks.

Atlanta is inland, so day trips lean toward trails rather than beaches. Stone Mountain Park welcomes leashed dogs on trails such as the Muscogee and Cherokee, though they are barred from the Walk Up Trail, the Memorial Lawn and event areas. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area has miles of leashed riverside hiking. Across Georgia's state parks, leashed dogs are welcome on most trails, with a few marked exceptions.

Atlanta requires dogs to be on a leash of six feet or less whenever they are outside a secured enclosure. All dogs must be current on rabies vaccination and licensed with the city, with licensing applying to dogs over three months old. You are responsible for cleaning up after your dog in any public park. Repeat leash and control violations carry escalating fines, so keep your dog leashed outside the dog parks.
