Dog Friendly Halifax

Halifax punches well above its size for dog owners. Point Pleasant Park's off-leash trails sit at the tip of the peninsula, the harbourfront boardwalk welcomes leashed dogs, and wild Atlantic beaches are a short drive away. Nova Scotia was also an early mover on dog friendly patios. The weak spots are transit, which only takes pets in carriers, and indoor dining, which Canadian health law keeps dog free.

Only in a carrier. Halifax Transit permits pets on buses and ferries solely when they are properly restrained in a closed cage or carrier, which rules out most dogs beyond the smallest. Service dogs are welcome across the network, leashed and under their handler's control. For a bigger dog, plan on walking the compact downtown, driving, or booking a pet friendly taxi to get around.

Halifax designates off-leash areas in several major parks, including large sections of Point Pleasant Park, Seaview Park, Shubie Park in Dartmouth, the Dartmouth Commons, Fort Needham and Hemlock Ravine. Most run on park hours, roughly 5 am to 10 pm unless posted otherwise. Point Pleasant has its own quirks, with Cambridge Drive on-leash at all times and Sailors Memorial Way closed to dogs after 10 am, so read the signs at the gate.

Point Pleasant Park is the standout, 75 hectares of coastal forest at the end of the peninsula where dogs can run off leash across large designated sections with sea views all round. Shubie Park in Dartmouth pairs off-leash space with canal-side trails and swimming spots, while Seaview Park sits right on the Bedford Basin. Hemlock Ravine offers shady old-growth walking on hot days. All are free and genuinely loved by local dogs.

Not indoors, as Canadian health law keeps dogs out of indoor dining rooms nationwide. Nova Scotia changed the patio rules in 2021 though, so restaurants, bars and cafes may now welcome pet dogs on street-accessed patios if they choose, with a sign posted so you know before you sit down. Walk the harbourfront boardwalk with a leashed dog and an ice cream, then give them a proper off-leash run through Point Pleasant Park's forest trails. Dartmouth's Shubie Park adds canal history and swimming. In summer, dog friendly patios have multiplied since the 2021 rule change, especially around the brewery scene. Finish with a coastal drive, because the ocean is never more than half an hour away.

Yes, the coastline is the reason to come. Nova Scotia's provincial park beaches generally allow dogs on a leash of no more than 2.5 metres, and surf beaches near the city like those along the Eastern Shore are popular with dogs outside peak season. Watch for posted seasonal closures protecting nesting piping plovers from late spring to early fall on some beaches, and never assume every beach is open to dogs year round. Peggy's Cove and the lighthouse trails make an easy leashed outing too.

Halifax's By-law A-700 on animals and responsible pet ownership requires dogs to be licensed, with a lifetime licence option for microchipped dogs, and to be leashed in public on a leash no longer than three metres except in designated off-leash areas. Breaches can draw a summary offence ticket starting around 237 dollars, with far heavier fines for dangerous dog offences. Pick up after your dog and mind park signage and you will have no trouble.
