Dog Friendly Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo is glamorous, tiny and surprisingly workable with a dog, especially a small one. The grand Societe des Bains de Mer hotels welcome pets up to fifteen kilos, dogs sit on the smartest terraces in the principality, and the coastal paths just over the French border give proper walking. The limits are real: leads are the law everywhere, and the beaches and manicured lawns are off limits to dogs.

Yes, on Monaco's CAM buses. A small dog travels free inside a bag no larger than about 45 centimetres, while a larger dog rides on a lead with its own ticket, subject to Monaco's public rules on muzzling. The principality is so compact that most visitors simply walk, and the public lifts and escalators that stitch the hillside together make that easier than it looks on the map.

Only in the designated dog areas, and Monaco takes this seriously. The principality provides a handful of fenced canine spaces, including the Espace Canin at Fontvieille and the fenced runs at Jardin de la Batterie and Parc Castel des Deux Rois, where dogs can run free. Everywhere else a lead is required by law, with a 75 euro fine for breaking it, and dogs are barred from the grassy areas and beaches.

The Larvotto promenade gives you the classic seafront stroll, and Parc Princesse Antoinette is the green heart of the principality with its own dog area. The best walking is just outside: the Sentier du Littoral coastal path at Cap-d'Ail runs for kilometres above the sea, and across the border at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin the Parc du Cap Martin and the Promenade Le Corbusier give pine-shaded paths with the coast at your feet.

Independent restaurants widely accept small dogs on their terraces in the French style. Ask as you arrive, and keep the lead short.

Walk the harbour and watch the yachts, take the Larvotto promenade at golden hour, and have a coffee on a Casino Square terrace with your dog beside you. The coastal paths to Cap-d'Ail and Cap Martin turn a city break into a proper walking trip, and the hillside gardens and lifts make even a short stroll scenic. The casino interiors, beaches and formal gardens stay dog free.

Monaco's own beaches are closed to dogs, but the French coast either side picks up the slack. Dogs can swim at the small harbour beach by the port area, and along the Riviera a handful of designated dog beaches and coves welcome them, with Nice's Site de la Lanterne among the best known. The coastal path from Cap-d'Ail to Menton strings together a whole day of sea views and swim stops.

Monaco writes its dog rules plainly. A lead is required on the public highway, with a 75 euro fine without one, dogs categorised as dangerous must wear a muzzle or the owner faces 200 euros, and failing to pick up after your dog costs 600 euros. Dogs are banned from the beaches, the lawns and the formal gardens. Follow those and the principality is genuinely welcoming, especially to smaller dogs.
