Is Montreal a good city to visit with a dog?
Montreal is a walkable, green city with the mountain park at its centre and dozens of dog parks across its neighbourhoods. Leashed dogs can now ride the metro under certain conditions, and terrasses welcome them in the warmer months. The main things to know are the muzzle rule on the metro and the indoor dining ban.
Can I take my dog on the Montreal metro?
Yes, leashed dogs are allowed on the STM metro under set conditions, generally off-peak on weekdays and all day at weekends, with wider access in summer. Your dog must wear a muzzle throughout, stay off the seats, and you may bring only one. You must also enter and exit through STM-owned station entrances.
Where can my dog go off the lead in Montreal?
Dog parks are the only public places where dogs can be off the lead, and Montreal has more than sixty of them across the city. You may bring up to two dogs at a time. Everywhere else, including the mountain, dogs must be on a lead.
Can my dog go up Mount Royal?
Yes, dogs are welcome on Mount Royal Park's forested trails and lookout paths, but they must be on a lead. It is one of the best walks in the city, with views over Montreal from the top. For off-leash running, use one of the nearby dog parks.
Are dogs allowed in Montreal restaurants and bars?
Dogs are often welcome on outdoor terrasses at the owner's discretion, kept leashed and away from food service. Indoors, Quebec health rules keep them out of places that serve food. Larger dogs of twenty kilos or more should wear a harness rather than just a collar.
Are the terrasses in Montreal dog friendly?
Many are, and in summer the city's terrasse culture makes it easy to sit outside with a dog. It is always the owner's call, so look for a sign on the door or ask before you sit. Your dog stays on a short lead, under control and away from the food service area.

Beyond Mount Royal, dogs enjoy the Lachine Canal paths, Parc Jean-Drapeau on the islands and the many neighbourhood parks. In the warmer months the terrasses and outdoor markets are very welcoming. Indoor attractions are mostly assistance dogs only.
