Hotel Esencia holds a respectable B Roch Rank, and for an owner with a small dog it makes a genuinely lovely beach escape on the Riviera Maya. Most of its rooms welcome dogs, with one dog per room and a weight limit of 20 lb, so this is a stay for smaller companions. The fee is $100 per night per pet, and your room comes ready with a dog bed, proper dishes for food and water and a toy, with waste bags there whenever you need them, so there is little you need to pack.
Outside the room your dog stays on a lead, and is welcome on the terrace and around the grounds. The hotel sits right on Xpu Ha beach, which makes for long walks, and there is a jungle trail and pathways through the grounds too. Around the pools and on the hotel's beach your dog rests in your arms or on your cabana, and dogs are not permitted in the pools, the restaurants, the bar, the spa or the main house living room.
Your dog cannot be left alone in the room, but the concierge can arrange a pet nanny by the hour. Food and treats can be ordered in with two weeks' notice, even your dog's preferred brand, grooming can be booked in your suite with a week's notice, and the team keeps an emergency vet number to hand. You will need your dog's vaccination certificate, and while there is no damage deposit, any damage is charged. For a small dog and an owner who wants the beach, this is a warm and well organised stay, and the B rank reflects it.
