Melville Castle Hotel holds an acceptable C Roch Rank. On the ground it feels a good deal warmer than that. All of the rooms are dog friendly, there is no weight or size limit, and the hotel told us dogs are welcome nearly anywhere in the castle. That includes the dining spaces at both breakfast and dinner, where there are allocated seating areas for you to eat with your dog beside you.
Every dog gets a goodie bag on arrival with poop bags, a tennis ball and some treats. A dog bed is available, though the hotel admits its beds are not particularly large, so bring your own for a big dog. There are no food or water bowls in the rooms, so pack those. The charge is £20 per dog, with no damage deposit, and two dogs are allowed per room. You are welcome to leave your dog in the room, and while there is no dog wash, you may use the bath and shower in your room after a muddy walk.
The setting does much of the work. The castle sits in woodland with plenty of space to roam, there are walking paths around the grounds, and maps of good routes are kept in the castle. What is missing is the service layer: no dog walking, sitting or grooming, though local firms can be booked privately, and no emergency vet number is held. This suits an owner of any size of dog who wants space, walks and a dog under the table at dinner. Owners who want services arranged for them should look elsewhere.
