In the Kasaba district lies the historic political center of Morocco. Several Sultans and Saadian rulers had palaces, buildings, and other residences built in this district dating from the 16th century and before. The Royal Palace, built in the 18th century, is a current residence of the King of Morocco. South of the palace are the Agdal Gardens which date back to the 12th century. The Mellah, or Jewish Quarter, also forms part of this district.
