Dog Friendly Houston

Houston suits dogs who like space, with some of the largest fenced dog parks in the country, the green ribbon of Buffalo Bayou through downtown and Galveston's beaches about an hour south. Winters are mild and easy for walking. The trade-offs are summer heat and humidity, which push walks to early and late, and indoor dining that stays service animals only, so patios and parks do the heavy lifting.

On Houston METRO buses and light rail, pets must travel inside a proper animal carrier and stay restrained in it for the whole ride. Trained service animals assisting a person with a disability are the exception and ride at no extra cost. If your dog is too big for a carrier, plan on walking, driving or a pet friendly rideshare instead of the bus or train.

Off-leash play is allowed only at the city's established fenced dog parks. Popular ones include Millie Bush Bark Park in George Bush Park, TC Jester Dog Park near the Heights, Danny Jackson Dog Park inside the Loop and Johnny Steele Dog Park in Buffalo Bayou Park. Everywhere else your dog must be leashed. Johnny Steele also asks that dogs show current City of Houston registration and rabies tags.

Millie Bush Bark Park is the giant of the group, around 13 double gated acres in west Houston with separate large and small dog areas and ponds. Johnny Steele Dog Park sits inside Buffalo Bayou Park with a shallow pond, grass and stone areas and downtown views. Danny Jackson and Maxey Park add more fenced acreage with dog showers, water fountains and split areas for big and small dogs.

Indoors is service animals only under Texas health rules. Texas law does let restaurants allow dogs in outdoor dining areas when the patio has an outside entrance, posted signage and no food prepared there, and the dog stays leashed and off the furniture. State law stops cities from making those patio rules stricter, so once a venue opts in, a leashed, well behaved dog on the ground is welcome. Breweries and beer gardens are reliable options.

Buffalo Bayou Park is the centerpiece, combining shaded trails, open lawns and the off-leash Johnny Steele Dog Park in one downtown green space. Walk the Buffalo Bayou loop, browse dog welcoming patios and breweries, then let your dog run at Millie Bush or Maxey. With Galveston an easy drive away, a beach morning and a patio afternoon make a comfortable dog friendly day out of Houston.

Galveston, about an hour south, is the go-to. Leashed dogs are welcome on the island's beaches, including East Beach and Stewart Beach, as long as you clean up, and nearby Crystal Beach on the Bolivar Peninsula is another wide, sandy option. Closer in, the Buffalo Bayou loop gives a scenic leashed walk. Bring water and check the sand and pavement temperature, which gets fierce in a Gulf Coast summer.

Houston requires dogs to be on a leash no longer than six feet whenever they are off your property and not inside an established dog park, and to stay under the control of a capable adult. All owned dogs must be licensed and microchipped, with a current rabies vaccination, and BARC now uses the registered microchip as proof of registration. Clean up after your dog, and mind the heat on summer walks.
