Dog Friendly Miami Beach

Miami Beach is fun with a dog if you work around the sand rules. The famous beaches are off-limits to dogs except at the designated Bark Beach zones, but Lincoln Road, the boardwalk and dozens of patio restaurants make it easy to spend the day out together. Nearby Miami adds proper off-leash dog beaches. Go early to beat the heat, carry water everywhere, and you and your dog will have a great time.

Only in a carrier. On Miami-Dade transit, including Metrobus, Metrorail and Metromover, pets must ride in an enclosed carrier such as a bag, backpack or kennel, kept out of the aisle. Only service animals may travel uncrated, on a leash. That makes transit tricky for larger dogs, so most visitors walk the compact South Beach area or use a dog friendly rideshare, confirming the driver accepts dogs when you book.

Miami Beach lets dogs off-leash only at its three Bark Beach zones during set hours: South Beach at 21st Street, Mid Beach at 53rd Street, and North Beach at 81st Street. Everywhere else on the sand is off-limits. Just over the causeways, Haulover Beach has an off-leash dog stretch and Hobie Island Beach lets dogs run and swim freely, so cross into Miami for a longer off-leash session.

South Pointe Park at the southern tip has an off-leash schedule from sunrise to 10am and 4:30 to 8pm, with ocean views. Belle Isle Park, between South Beach and the mainland, has separate small and large dog areas beside the water. For more space, head into Miami for Tropical Park or Amelia Earhart Park, both with large fenced runs and even dog pools. Carry water, as shade is limited in summer.

The upside is Miami Beach patio culture: Lincoln Road is an open-air promenade where leashed dogs are welcome to wander, and many of its restaurants seat dogs at outdoor tables. Spots like Glass and Vine even offer a dog menu. Always ask staff before sitting down, and keep your dog leashed and out of walkways.

Stroll Lincoln Road, walk the beachfront boardwalk that runs for miles behind the dunes, and explore the Art Deco streets of South Beach with your dog on lead. Early mornings are ideal before the heat and crowds build. Pair a Bark Beach session with brunch on a patio, then cross to Miami for an off-leash run at Haulover. Pet boutiques like Bonefly on Lincoln Road round out an easy day out.

Dogs are banned from Miami Beach sand except the three Bark Beaches, which open daily 7am to 9am from November to March and 9am to 11am from April to October, with North Beach adding weekend afternoons. For unrestricted sand and surf, drive to Haulover Beach, which has an off-leash dog area, or Hobie Island Beach on the Key Biscayne causeway, where dogs run and swim off-leash.

Miami-Dade law requires dogs to be leashed in public and you must pick up after them, with a 50 dollar fine for breaching either. Dogs must stay off the main sand outside Bark Beach hours, and rabies vaccination and county licensing are required for resident dogs. Sea turtle nesting season shapes where dogs can go, so follow posted signs. In the heat, test the pavement with your hand and carry water at all times.
