Bournemouth is seven miles of sandy beach backed by wooded chines and gardens, and dogs are welcome across most of it once you know the seasonal beach zones. You can walk the wild headland of Hengistbury Head, follow a chine down through the gardens to the front, then take a clifftop pub above Southbourne beach with a bowl and a biscuit waiting. This is our working guide to the town with a dog: where to walk, where to eat and drink, and the certified hotels that genuinely welcome them.

Dog Friendly Bournemouth · Good To Know

Is Bournemouth a good place to visit with a dog?

Bournemouth is a fine seaside town for a dog, with seven miles of sandy beach, wooded chines running down to the front, and the wild headland of Hengistbury Head at the eastern end. The one thing to plan around is the summer beach rules, which restrict dogs to signposted zones from May to September. Out of season the whole beach opens up, and the gardens, cliffs and pubs are dog friendly all year.

Can I take my dog on public transport in Bournemouth?

Yes. Dogs travel free on the local buses at the driver's discretion, on a lead and off the seats, and up to two dogs ride free on the trains into Bournemouth under the national rail conditions. The seafront promenade and the chines make much of the town walkable, and the land train and clifftop lifts are handy, though it is worth checking their dog policy before you rely on them.

Where can dogs go off the lead in Bournemouth?

Hengistbury Head has open heath and cliff paths where dogs can range under close control, away from the nature-sensitive areas that ask for leads. Turbary Common is a heathland nature reserve with off-lead walking, and the year-round dog sections of the beach let dogs run on the sand. Elsewhere in the gardens and busier promenades a lead is expected, and livestock and ground-nesting birds mean close control on the heaths.

Where are the best dog walks in Bournemouth?

Hengistbury Head is the standout, a wild headland walk with sea on both sides and views to the Isle of Wight. The chines, Alum, Boscombe and Middle, give sheltered wooded routes down to the sea, and the Lower Gardens run green right through the town centre. Kings Park adds playing fields and woods inland, and Turbary Common offers proper heathland close to the built-up edge of the town.

Are dogs allowed in Bournemouth restaurants, pubs and bars?

Yes, widely. UK pubs welcome dogs inside at the landlord's discretion, and Bournemouth has plenty, from the Goat and Tricycle in the Triangle to the clifftop Spyglass and Kettle above Southbourne beach. Southbourne in particular is full of dog friendly bars and cafes, and seafront spots like Urban Reef at Boscombe welcome dogs on the terrace. Food-led venues vary, so a quick check on arrival is sensible.

What dog friendly things can I do in Bournemouth?

Walk Hengistbury Head, follow a chine down through the gardens to the promenade, and stroll the seafront in the year-round dog zones. Southbourne's clifftop and the beach huts make a breezy walk, and the town gardens run for miles inland along the Bourne stream. Pair it with a dog friendly pub or a seafront cafe, and take the short hop to Poole Quay or the New Forest for a bigger day out.

Are there dog friendly beaches or day trips near Bournemouth?

Yes, with the seasonal rule to watch. On Bournemouth and Poole beaches dogs are allowed everywhere from 1 October to 30 April, but between 1 May and 30 September they are limited to signposted dog zones such as Fisherman's Walk to Southbourne and parts of Hengistbury Head, while some stretches are dog beaches all year. Beyond the town, the New Forest, with its free-roaming ponies, and Studland and Durlston on the Purbeck coast make superb day trips.

What are the rules for dogs in Bournemouth?

UK law requires your dog to be microchipped and to wear a collar with your name and address in public. You must clean up after your dog, and the council runs Public Spaces Protection Orders covering the seasonal beach restrictions, dog fouling, leads on direction and exclusion from marked areas, with fixed penalties for breaches. Follow the beach signs in summer, and keep your dog under close control on the heaths and around the New Forest ponies.
