Is Bristol a good city to visit with a dog?
Bristol is a brilliant city to explore with a dog. It is green, walkable and relaxed about dogs, with huge open spaces like the Downs, Ashton Court and Leigh Woods, a harbourside lined with dog friendly cafes, and pubs that genuinely welcome dogs inside. The ferry even takes dogs for free. The main limits are a few National Trust lead sections and indoor visitor attractions, but there is easily enough to fill several happy days.
Can I take my dog on public transport in Bristol?
Yes, and easily. Dogs travel on First buses at the driver's discretion, usually with no fuss for a well behaved dog on a lead. On Great Western Railway trains you can bring up to two dogs free of charge, on a lead or in a carrier, kept off the seats. Bristol Ferry Boats also welcome dogs free on their harbour waterbus, on a short lead. That makes car-free days out very doable here.
Where can dogs go off the lead in Bristol?
Bristol has generous off-lead space. The Downs, the vast Clifton and Durdham green above the Avon Gorge, is a favourite for open running, and Ashton Court Estate offers over 850 acres of fields and woodland trails. At Leigh Woods, the Forestry England half allows dogs off lead, while the National Trust half asks for leads, with a stone wall marking the boundary. Off-lead is fine in most parks not covered by control orders.
Where are the best dog parks in Bristol?
Bristol does off-lead differently to the US, with big open parks rather than fenced dog parks. The Downs, Ashton Court, Leigh Woods and Blaise Castle Estate are the local favourites for a proper run and a good sniff. If your dog needs a secure, fenced space, several private hire fields around the edge of the city let you book a slot for nervous or reactive dogs. For most visitors, the Downs and Ashton Court are all you need.
Are dogs allowed in Bristol restaurants, pubs and bars?
Very much so. Unlike the US, UK pubs widely welcome dogs inside, and Bristol is one of the best cities for it. The Hole in the Wall and The Mall in Clifton welcome dogs indoors, and harbourside spots like Mud Dock and No.1 Harbourside lay on water bowls and treats. Many cafes and restaurants are happy to seat dogs too. Food-led venues can be stricter, so it is worth a quick check when you arrive.

Are there dog friendly beaches or day trips near Bristol?
Yes. Weston-super-Mare is the classic seaside day trip, under an hour away, but mind the seasonal rule: dogs are banned from the main beach between the Grand Pier and Royal Sands from 9am to 7pm, 1 May to 30 September. Year round you can walk dogs from Royal Sands to Uphill, from the Grand Pier to Marine Lake, and on Sand Bay. Leigh Woods and the Mendip Hills also make excellent day trips.
What are the rules for dogs in Bristol?
Bristol has a Public Space Protection Order for dogs: you must clean up after your dog, put it on a lead when a warden asks, and keep dogs out of marked children's play areas, or risk a fixed penalty fine. Off-lead is otherwise fine in most parks. UK law also requires every dog to be microchipped and to wear a collar with the owner's name and address in public. Carry bags and water on longer walks.
