Dog Friendly Cirencester

Cirencester is the capital of the Cotswolds, a handsome market town ringed by some of the best walking country in England, and dogs are welcome across most of it. There is estate parkland on the doorstep, riverside greens in the centre, and pubs that genuinely welcome dogs inside by the fire. The main closed doors are a few indoor visitor attractions, but the walking and the pub culture make it a lovely dog trip.

Yes. Small dogs are always welcome on Stagecoach buses and larger dogs ride at the driver's discretion, on a lead and off the seats, which is rarely a problem for a well behaved dog. Cirencester has no station of its own, but from the nearby Kemble line Great Western Railway lets you bring up to two dogs free of charge on a short lead. That makes wider Cotswold days out very doable.

There is good open space for it. Cirencester Park, the Bathurst Estate on the western edge of town, has marked routes where dogs can be off the lead, though not on the central Broad Ride grass, and the Abbey Grounds allow off-lead walking north of the water. Out of town, the Sapperton canal and woodland circular is largely off-lead. Keep dogs on the lead near livestock, water birds and the town-centre paths.

Cirencester Park is the grand one, with miles of woodland rides on the Bathurst Estate right beside the town. The Abbey Grounds give a gentle riverside loop in the centre, and the Roman amphitheatre on the edge of town is a breezy grassy walk. Further afield, the Cotswold Water Park to the south and the Sapperton canal walk to the west open up lakes, meadows and towpaths for a proper afternoon.

Unlike the US, UK pubs widely welcome dogs inside at the landlord's discretion, and Cirencester is full of them, from the Fleece on the Market Place to the Bear Inn and the Black Horse, most with water bowls and a few treats. Rave Coffee on the edge of town welcomes dogs in its roastery cafe. Food-led restaurants can be stricter, so a quick check on the way in never hurts.

Walk the woodland rides of Cirencester Park, loop the Abbey Grounds and see the great wool church from the Market Place, then settle into a dog friendly pub for lunch. The town's independent shops are relaxed about dogs, and the Cotswold Way and the canal and water-park walks are all within easy reach for a bigger day out. Keep dogs on the lead around the town centre and any grazing livestock.

The Cotswold Water Park to the south has miles of dog friendly lakeside footpaths, the Sapperton canal walk gives woodland and towpath, and the Cotswold Way national trail runs across the wider area for as far as you like. The honey-stone villages nearby are dog friendly too, most with a welcoming pub. Keep dogs on a lead near nesting birds and grazing animals, especially in spring and summer.

UK law requires your dog to be microchipped and to wear a collar with your name and address on it in any public place. You must clean up after your dog, and the district runs a Public Spaces Protection Order requiring dogs on a lead when an officer asks and out of marked children's play areas, with a fixed penalty for breaches. Off-lead is otherwise fine in most open spaces, on close control near livestock.
