Is Los Angeles a good city to visit with a dog?
Los Angeles is built for dogs, with year-round sunshine, off-leash canyons and a patio culture that never really stops. Many restaurants, breweries and shops welcome dogs outdoors, and the beaches and hikes are a big draw. The two things to watch are the heat, which can burn paws on pavement, and the fact that most beaches limit dogs.
Where can my dog go off the lead in Los Angeles?
Runyon Canyon in the Hollywood Hills is the famous off-leash spot, with ninety acres of trails and city views. Parts of Elysian Park also allow off-leash walking, though watch for coyotes early and late in the day. Everywhere else in the city, dogs should be on a lead.
Are there dog beaches in Los Angeles?
Rosie's Dog Beach in Long Beach is the only official off-leash dog beach in LA County, open daily from 6am to 8pm. Just south, Huntington Dog Beach offers a mile and a half of off-leash sand. Most other LA beaches do not allow dogs even on a lead, so head to these two.
Can I take my dog on public transport in Los Angeles?
LA Metro allows small dogs on trains and buses only if they are carried in a secure carrier, so it is not an option for larger dogs. The city is very car-led, and most visitors get around with a dog by car. Check that any taxi or ride app is happy to take a dog before you book.
Are dogs allowed at LA restaurants and bars?
Thanks to the year-round patio weather, a huge number of LA restaurants, cafes and breweries welcome dogs at their outdoor tables. Some even serve dog treats or a dedicated dog menu. Indoor dining is off limits, but the outdoor scene more than makes up for it.

Beyond Runyon Canyon, dogs enjoy the beaches at Long Beach, the outdoor shops around Abbot Kinney and The Grove, and long walks along the coast. Many farmers' markets and outdoor plazas welcome them too. Indoor attractions and studios are mostly assistance dogs only.
Is it too hot to bring a dog to Los Angeles?
LA can get very hot, and pavements and sand heat up enough to hurt paws in the middle of the day. Walk early or late, carry water and use the shade, especially in summer. In the cooler months the climate is close to ideal for a dog.
What are the rules for dogs in Los Angeles?
Dogs must be licensed, on a lead of six feet or less in public, and off-leash only in designated areas. You must clean up after your dog, and beach and park rules vary from city to city within the LA area. Always check the local signs, as neighbouring cities set their own rules.
