Dog Friendly Palm Springs

Palm Springs is a relaxed desert resort town that suits dogs well most of the year, with off-leash dog parks, creekside trails and a strong shaded-patio culture downtown. The one serious catch is summer heat: pavement and sand can burn paws and the danger is real, so walks belong in the early morning and the evening from late spring to early autumn. Plan around the heat and it is a genuinely easy place to travel with a dog.

On SunLine buses, pets must travel inside a carrier or cage, with trained service animals the exception. That rules out a larger dog on the bus, so most visitors get around by car, which also suits the spread-out valley and the desert day trips. If you do use a rideshare, check the driver is happy to take a dog when you book.

In the fenced dog parks. The David H. Ready dog park behind City Hall is the central off-leash spot, and Demuth Park on the east side has two more fenced areas with water stations. Everywhere else in the city dogs must be on a leash of six feet or less, and the desert preserves and creekside trails are all on-leash. In the fenced parks, keep your dog under reliable voice control.

The David H. Ready Palm Springs Dog Park is the go-to, a fenced off-leash park right behind City Hall with shade and water. Demuth Park in the east of the city adds two more fenced off-leash areas, one for smaller dogs. For an on-leash walk with more scenery, Ruth Hardy Park is a pleasant town green with a dog fountain and waste bags. All are free and best used in the cooler hours.

Indoors, no, as California health rules keep dogs out of indoor dining. The upside is that California lets restaurants welcome dogs on their outdoor patios at the owner's discretion, and Palm Springs leans into it, with shaded courtyard patios all over downtown and Uptown, water bowls, and a few spots that keep a dog menu. Ask as you sit down, keep your dog leashed at the table, and the patio scene here is a real pleasure.

Walk the creekside path and the desert preserves at dawn, browse the downtown shops that keep water bowls out, and give your dog a proper run at the David H. Ready or Demuth dog parks. The Uptown Design District and Palm Canyon Drive are made for a patio lunch with a dog at your feet. Save the middle of the day for air conditioning in summer, and always carry water.

Yes, with one big caveat. Joshua Tree National Park, about an hour away, allows leashed dogs only within 100 feet of roads, picnic areas and campgrounds and bans them from all trails, so it is a drive-and-stroll trip rather than a hike. For real walking, the Whitewater Preserve and Mission Creek Preserve northwest of the city welcome leashed dogs on their trails. Carry plenty of water and check the ground temperature before you set off.

Dogs must be leashed in public on a lead of six feet or less except in the designated off-leash parks, and you must clean up after your dog. Dogs need a current rabies vaccination and city or county licensing applies to residents. The rule that matters most here is not on the books: in the hot months, test the pavement with your hand, walk at the edges of the day, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
