Dog Friendly Sacramento

Sacramento is an easy, green city for a dog, built where two rivers meet and laced with a long riverside parkway and leafy midtown streets. There is off-leash space, miles of flat trail and a relaxed patio and biergarten scene. The summers are hot, so lean on early and late walks and the shade of the big parks, and indoor dining is off limits as it is across California, which the patios more than cover.

On SacRT buses and light rail, small dogs may ride inside an enclosed carrier, with service animals the exception to any size limit. A larger dog that cannot fit a carrier is not permitted, so plan on a car or a pet friendly rideshare for a bigger dog. Central Sacramento and midtown are flat and walkable, which helps.

In the fenced dog parks. Partner Park in South Land Park is a 2.5-acre fenced off-leash park with separate sections for large and small dogs, and Sutter's Landing on the river has its own fenced off-leash area. Everywhere else, including the American River Parkway, dogs must be on a leash of six feet or less, and you are asked to stay clear of the parkway's nature-study areas.

Partner Park in South Land Park is the standout, fenced with split areas for big and small dogs. Sutter's Landing Regional Park adds a large fenced off-leash area right on the river, handy for midtown. For a long leashed walk rather than a run, the American River Parkway gives you miles of riverside trail, and William Land Park is a shady, central favourite. All are free.

Indoors, no, under California health rules, but California lets restaurants welcome dogs on their outdoor patios at the owner's discretion, and Midtown does it well. Der Biergarten takes leashed dogs at its beer-garden tables, and spots like Tapa the World and Capitol Garage keep water bowls on the patio. Ask as you sit, keep your dog leashed and off the furniture, and you will rarely be turned away outdoors.

Walk the American River Parkway or loop William Land Park, let your dog run at Partner Park or Sutter's Landing, and wander the tree-lined Midtown grid with its dog welcoming patios. The riverfront in Old Sacramento makes a pleasant leashed stroll, and a biergarten table rounds off the day. Save the hottest hours for shade, and the state museums and Capitol interior are service-dog only.

Yes. The American River gives leashed river access close to town, and about two hours east the Lake Tahoe basin has dog friendly beaches and forest trails, superb in the warmer months. Closer in, the trails of the Sierra foothills and the Cosumnes River Preserve welcome leashed dogs. Keep a lead handy, carry water, and check for seasonal or nesting-area restrictions along the rivers.

Dogs must be leashed in public on a lead of six feet or less except in designated off-leash parks, and you must clean up after your dog. Dogs four months and older need a current rabies vaccination and city licensing applies to residents, who may now keep up to four licensed dogs per household under a 2026 update. Watch the summer heat, and keep dogs clear of the parkway's marked nature-study zones.
