The huge Forest Park sits on the city's edge, and cafes and shops are relaxed about dogs. The main thing to plan around is transit, which only takes dogs in carriers.
Where can my dog go off the lead in Portland?
Portland has over thirty off-leash areas, both fenced and open, including a large one at Mt Tabor Park and another at Sellwood Riverfront Park. These are the places to let your dog run. Note that Forest Park itself is leash-only, despite its size.
Can I walk my dog in Forest Park?
Yes, Forest Park is a wonderful walk, with the thirty-mile Wildwood Trail winding through the woods. Dogs are welcome throughout, but they must stay on a lead the whole way. For off-leash running, use one of the city's designated dog areas instead.

TriMet only allows dogs on MAX trains and buses if they are in a secure, enclosed carrier, so it does not work for larger dogs. Assistance dogs travel freely. Most visitors with a bigger dog get around Portland by car or on foot.
