San Diego is one of the most dog friendly cities in the country, with warm weather, off-leash dog beaches and an easy outdoor lifestyle. Many patios, breweries and shops welcome dogs, and the coast is the main event. Plan around the seasonal beach hours and the midday heat.
Where are the off-leash dog beaches in San Diego?
Dog Beach in Ocean Beach is off-leash around the clock, while Fiesta Island on Mission Bay is a huge leash-optional area open from 4am to 10pm. The northern end of Coronado beach is also off-leash year round. Keep your dog on a lead until you reach the marked off-leash zones.
Are there time restrictions for dogs on San Diego beaches?
Yes, on many regular beaches dogs are barred during the busy daytime hours. From April to October dogs are not allowed between 9am and 6pm, and from November to March between 9am and 4pm. Outside those windows dogs are welcome but must be on a lead, while the dedicated dog beaches stay open all day.
Can I take my dog on public transport in San Diego?
On the San Diego Trolley and MTS buses, non-service dogs are only allowed if secured in a carrier that fits on your lap. Larger dogs are not permitted, so most visitors get around with a dog by car. Assistance dogs travel freely.
