The Zuiderzeepad is a unique long-distance walk (LAW 8) around the entire IJsselmeer, the lake that used to be the Zuiderzee. A walk from Schellinkhout to De Nek is an absolute must for bird watchers. Schellinkhout is located on the Markermeer lake. Clay was excavated in the area to build the dikes along the water. This created clay pit De Nek. The nature reserve is also called the gull colony, but there are countless other birds such as starlings, tufted ducks, lapwings, wagtails, curlews and the rare merganser. The area is open during the breeding season, but be careful where you walk.

After a short stretch through the neighborhoods of Hoogkarspel, you will soon reach a bicycle path along meadows, which continues to a grass path through the De Weelen nature reserve. This part offers typical Dutch views of meadows and water features. You occasionally have to climb over a cattle gate. After the nature reserve, the route continues along the cycle path, and then through the forest Streekbos with a swimming lake from where you walk to Enkhuizen.
