There is limited area to park so it is best to get there early. Dickey Ridge is a well-traveled trail for the first mile and a half. Once you cross over Skyline Line Drive, the trail becomes less traveled. The first mile follows a running stream with some great scenery. Once you reach the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center, there are great views of the valley and mountains. There are bears in the area and there is even a sign encouraging you to keep your dogs on a leash.

The Dickey Ridge Trail is one of the first trails along Skyline Drive when you enter from Front Royal and begin driving south. The trail primarily heads uphill on the way toward Snead Farm and crosses Skyline Drive a few times. You will also hike past the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center and a picnic area.

This route along the Appalachian Trail leaves from Lake Front Royal and ends at the Shenandoah National Park Boundary. The trail is mostly uphill on the way toward the park boundary. Along the way, you will pass the spur trail for the Tom Floyd Wayside Shelter. This is a small shelter maintained by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club with a picnic table.
