While, in its entirety, it's only 2.7 miles one way, the Northwestern Trail is rich with variety. In that short distance, it crosses Silver Creek (of the Lake Michigan watershed) twice. You transition from city limits to rural. Along the way you pass through deciduous woods and a conifer tree farm, along marshland, farmland, prairie, and a quarry lake - nearly all within view of the creek bed. The local Noon Kiwanis club enlists volunteers to maintain it. There are a couple of picnic tables...

There are several trail options here, including a connection to Ceresco Prairie Conservancy. Leashed dogs are allowed. South Woods is open to the public and can be accessed via the main entrance located on Union Street. Incorporating forests that are part of South Woods Park and Annie Star Woods, hikers can enjoy several miles of hiking trails of varying difficulty.

This trail is typical of the raised railroad bed trails - a smooth walk or bike ride. Accessibility: There are not any designated accessible spaces in the gravel parking lot off of Locust Road at the southeast end of the trail. There are 2 designated accessible spaces in the paved parking lot off of South Church Street at the northeast end of the trail. Both of them are van-accessible with striped access aisles.
