The first half of the loop heads towards Dark Hollow Pond and is close to Interstate 93, so some road noise may be present. Along the second half of the route, you will hike over Winthrop and Bear Hill. The top of Bear Hill is home to the Bear Hill Tower which is no longer maintained or open to the public.

Begin from the Bear Hill Parking Area which is off Fallon Road. Shortly after leaving the trailhead you begin a steep climb up Bear Hill to the Bear Hill Tower. The tower is no longer maintained and open to the public. After Bear Hill you will continue through the forest to the top of Winthrop Hill and Taylor Mountain.

Parking is available near the intersection of Appalachian Road and Hillcrest Parkway. First, you will head towards the dam and then loop through the forest. The southern loop follows the Reservoir Trail and Hillcrest Parkway. Some of the trail junctions are not well marked, so downloading the map ahead of time is recommended.

This loop begins from Greenwood Park and then enters into Middlesex Fells Reservation. The trail crosses over the top of Whip Hill which has a rocky summit. You will also pass by Crystal Spring.
