Around 1070, the future Duke of the Staufer, Friedrich I of Swabia, had Hohenstaufen Castle built in an outstanding strategic location, in which Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa can also be shown to have stayed in 1181. The castle was destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525. The castle ruins are now a popular destination for hikers in the Staufen home region.
