This is a long, strenuous trek across the entirety of Catalina Island. But the views are amazing. Beautiful blue ocean views in every direction in the morning, and incredible solitude, serenity and interior island views in the afternoon. Most backpackers do this over four days and depart from Twin Harbors. Hiking permits are required for all hikers and cyclists. Hermit Gulch Trail is the the first trail you will hike if you're hiking thru the Trans-Catalina Trail. Starting at the Hermit Gulch Campground, this trail is mostly in the sun with some shady spots here and there for breaks. Offering some amazing views along the way and encountering some interesting plants makes for an entertaining hike. There is a combination of steep inclines and level areas and steps. At the end of the trail you end up at the top of the hill which also has a nice gazebo....

Hike through these scenic ocean trails lined with coastal sage, cacti, and native vegetation. This area has interesting television history. In 1996, MTV used surrounding areas of the peninsula to film the MTV Beach House. In addition, FOX filmed scenes from the hit show The O.C in the surrounding area and many of the Disney films - Pirates of the Caribbean were photographed right on this coast. Dogs are allowed on leash along the trail route, but not on the beaches.

This trail is a beach walk along a mix of sandy and rocky terrain. There are a few areas along the trail that frequently close due to falling rock and unstable cliffs. Be mindful of these closed area and keep and eye out or for signage. This trail is unique and full of scenery. There are many tide pools along the way to explore the interesting marine life.
