A few weeks before the second Battle of the Marne, Xavier Moissinac, ace of the SPA 154 squadron, fell during an aerial combat on 3 June 1918 over the villages of Condé-en-Brie and Celles-les-Condé. Despite a bullet lodged between his eyes, he managed to land his biplane fighter intact not far from Surmelin, before giving up the ghost.
