Great workout with steady to steep inclines to the top. It’s very steep the ENTIRE way up and slippery on the way down, but a great work out! From the top, the trail drops down to Rainbow Road, which connects to Trestle Road/Lookout Tr. and Mitchell Toll Road. For best views, go up to Lookout Rocks; or via Toll Rd, to Rattlesnake Summit.

This loop offers a steep climb up Stomping Knob Trail to the ridge. The trail connects with West Ridge Trail, which leads to Big Piney Trail. Going down Big Piney Trail you'll pass Rattlesnake Rock with a great view of Black Mountain over to High Windy Mountain and the southern rim of the Swannanoa Valley. Big Piney Trail also has a steep section, but it's much shorter than the steeps of Stomping Knob. It's all a great hike.
