The hiking trails are well marked by colored markers on posts at various points along the trails. Many of the trails utilize the fire lanes for large portions, then go through the forest areas. Most trails are shared by equestrians and hikers, some fire lanes are open to snowmobiles when there is more than 4" of snow. The Yellow Trail is located in the Sand Ridge State Forest in Mason County, IL. At 7,200, acres it's the largest state forest in Illinois. There are 10 Back-country campsites along the yellow trail route. Users must obtain a permit from the forest headquarters prior to back-country use. The trail head is also at the forest headquarters.
