Located in the Lake Etling unit of Black Mesa State Park and Preserve, trailhead is behind the State Park headquarters building and follows the canyon rim overlooking the campground and Lake Etling, as well as providing views of the surrounding prairie. Route is well marked, but rocky in places. No shade but there are several benches provided at overlooks for taking a rest. This is an excellent sampling of several park features including rock alcoves, canyon descent, canyon rim walk, and plains terrain. The surface of the trail is a little rough but very well marked with frequent, numbered blaze posts. Although the blazes change color and trail name, they progress 1 through 40.

This trail winds through the Black Mesa Nature Preserve in the far reaches of the Oklahoma panhandle. It ends at Oklahoma's high point, at 4,973 feet above sea level. There are great views of the mesas along the way.

Capulin Volcano is relatively uncrowded and quiet October through March. Visitation is lowest in January and February. Visitation is highest from April through September. July is the busiest month at the park, with approximately 15,000 visitors. Summer weekends tend to be busier than mid-week and heavy visitation can necessitate traffic control which may result in delays in visiting the volcano rim.
