The trail markings are for the most part pretty good. The terrain is varied, featuring lake, old growth forest, subalpine rock gardens, fossils, and alpine scree. Look out for small ocean fossils when you first come out of the tree line! Around Goldilocks Loop there's some minimal scrambling on scree that can't be avoided from either direction.

Old Growth Trail is a stunning hike through ancient cedar forest with massive old trees along the way, making it a well-covered canopy hike. A little creek with a bench makes for a perfect photo spot along the way. It can be done as an out and back from the lodge, or carry on to connect to the Rail Trail for a longer hike.

Features
This trail is kept in good shape and there are frequent markers in the shape of small square signs that say "Fernie Mountain Trail", as well as the occasional bright-coloured flag. It is hard to get lost (in dry season anyway)! It is a fairly steep trail throughout. There is a small bench halfway through and a good-sized bench at the top. These are noted on the map as waypoints. The last 600m is unshaded and there can be lots of bugs out, so sun protection and bug spray are recommended!...
