This trail circles Lake Siskiyou crossing several trailheads around the perimeter of the lake. The bridges across the Sacramento River where it enters the lake are removed for winter typically in October and reinstalled in May or June. You'll pass an area near Lake Siskiyou Beach where there is a restaurant and other facilities.

As of June 2021, the Mount Shasta Trail Association and volunteers have updated and rerouted the trail to Heart Lake to make it more visible and to let the flora in the area recover from years of random undefined trails. Please stick to the new well-defined trails marked with cairns and (for now in 2021) ribbons. Signs are on order. A sign with a circle and crossing line over a boot means don't hike here anymore: let the fauna recover. Heart Lake is pretty but much muddier and shallower...

Many users have reported icy conditions during the winter months. At this time of year, the road to the trailhead may be gated and you will have to add a couple of miles if you park at a lower trailhead. Many users go swimming or cliff-diving at the Lower, Middle, or Upper Falls and various pools along this trail, although caution is advised.
