The Fort Ruby Interpretive Trail is located on the southern end of the Ruby Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, and is a National Historic Landmark. Fort Ruby was a U.S. Army Fort from 1862 to 1869, charged with protecting the Hastings Emigrant Trail and Pony Express Route during a period of hostilities with the Western Shoshone.
