Matthews Brake National Wildlife Refuge has a lot of green space and natural habitat perfect for wintering waterfowl. This area features bottomland hardwoods that make a great place to nest for migrating bird species. While this is a short hike, it gives visitors a taste of the beauty and abundance of animals that call this refuge home.

This 0.5 mile one-way trail takes visitors through a bottomland hardwood forest and terminates at a blind, a special cover to hide from wildlife. Here, photographers of all skill levels can observe and photograph wildlife that is drawn to the waters of the Stillwater bayou tributary. Visitors can see wood ducks, prothonotary warblers, hooded mergansers, red-eared sliders and many other species.

The Herbert Nature Trail is a 0.9 mile loop that meanders along the banks of Happy Hollow Lake and features an observation tower at its midpoint, which provides views of a meadow and reforestation area.

This trail heads south from the Central Street levee parking to Deaton Street and back. This is a maintenance road. Maintenance vehicles may be present. Wearing bright clothing, a helmet, and using lights or flags are recommended when sharing space with motor vehicles.
