This is a peaceful and quiet hike around a beautiful part of Martin Dies, Jr. State Park. Bird watching is very popular in this park as you can observe a variety of species along the waters shore. Cypress trees create shade along the path and provide shelter for the abundance of wildlife in the park. The views of the water are serene and the trail is usually low-trafficked.

The Slough trail is a clean and flat trail that is great for bringing the family and pets along to enjoy. There are lots of benches to sit on and rest while admiring the views. Shade can be found for the majority of the path, making for a great summer escape route. There are many mosquitos in the hot months, and bringing bug spray is suggested.

This Sawmill Trail takes visitors to check out the old sawmill buildings. After you cross the small bridge at the parking lot, you will take a left across a field to cross the creek again. When you come up from the creek you will walk through a campsite. After a short while on the road, you will go through a second campsite to connect to the main part of the trail. Overall, this is a really great family-friendly hike.
