This loop covers rolling terrain beginning from South Rolling Road. After hiking along the Soapstone Trail for about a mile you can detour off onto the Bull Run Trail and make a make which then reconnects to Soapstone. On the way back you will hike along Soapstone Brook before arriving back at the parking area.

Begin from South Rolling Road and follow the Soapstone Trail downhill through the forest and along Soapstone Branch. You will pass through a picnic area with a playground along the way before arriving at the Grist Mill Trail. The Grist Mill Trail is a very well-maintained and flat path along the Patapsco River.

Beginning from South Rolling Road, the Soapstone Trail loops through the forest and crosses over Soapstone Branch and some other creeks. You will pass through a picnic area which is a perfect spot to stop and relax before finishing the second half of the hike. The trails are known to be muddy after it has recently rained, so be prepared.

The Glen Artney area consists of a few challenging trails when it comes to the terrain. This area is quite hilly with a few big ups and downs. Many of the new re-routed trails are high and dryer. The only flat easy, paved trail is the Grist Mill Trail which would be considered the main connector. It allows you to create many different loops. Begin from the Avalon Area trailhead where there is a picnic shelter. The loop is mostly wooded but does pass along the edge of an open field at one point. Wildlife such as deer is often spotted throughout the forest. The area is popular with hikers and mountain bikers on the weekends, so an early start is recommended.
