The Funeral Mound is a special place where members of the Mississippian society were buried. Over time, the once 50-ft tall mound has now shrunk to its 20ft tall current formation due to construction in the 1870s. This trail also takes you on the Funeral Loop trail through the woods to observe the historical mound.

The Great Temple Mound was created by the Mississippians Tribe in the 10th century. This pyramid mound is where the great chief of the tribe lived and was built with clay steps, baskets of dirt, and a lot of hard work. TIn order to access the top, there are steps that allow people to stand on top and enjoy the surrounding views.

A very nice trail in a very cool park! The trail is well maintained and decently marked. There is a good amount of shade with pockets of sun. It’s in the middle of a park which features many different significant historical sights.

This route has a mix of paved and natural paths and intermittent shade. Make sure to check out the Native American mounds and the historical information available at the visitor center. Accessibility: There are 2 designated accessible spaces in the paved parking lot off of Ocmulgee National Park Road at the north end of the trail.
