The First Battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle of the armies in Virginia. On July 16, 1861, the untried Union army under Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell marched from Washington against the Confederate army, which was drawn up behind Bull Run beyond Centreville. This loop passes through the historic Civil War battlefield in Manassas National Battlefield Park. The loop begins and ends at the Stone House, which served as a hospital during the first and second battles at Manassas. The house is open today for interpretive tours.

Follow blue blazes. There are milepost markers every mile. The trail proceeds east about 1/2 mile to Cub Run then south to Bull Run. The trail remains north and east of Bull Run for 18 miles to the main parking lot in Fountainhead Regional Park. Watch for the old Confederate artillery position near mile 4.
