The North Overlook Trail is located at the end of the scenic park road at the summit of Scottsbluff National Monument. An easy paved loop leads to numerous scenic overlooks that take in the Platte River Valley, town of Scottsbluff, rugged badlands breaks along the south rim of the valley, and views as far away as Chimney Rock to the east. This paved trail starts from the visitor center and heads partway up the Saddle Rock Trail, stopping when it begins to get steep. It provides wonderful views but has no shade, so bring plenty of water and sun protection. The covered wagons in front of the Scotts Bluff National Monument administrative building mark the start of the Oregon Trail Pathway. The smaller Studebaker and Murphy wagons were the mode of transportation for families. The larger Conestoga wagon was not often used on the Oregon Trail, but was used to haul freight. Living history demonstrations occur at the Murphy wagon during the summer. When the trail surface changes from asphalt to dirt, you are walking "on" the actual Oregon Trail....
