The Red Trail follows the south edge of the Green Trail out of the parking lot before splitting off to loop through a second growth forest of oak, maple, aspen and tupelo. It parallels the Jack Markell Trail along its western side and provides access to that trail in two spots

From the information kiosk, walk along the Green Trail toward the Marsh. The Blue Trail heads east along the marsh and connects with the trail along the Norfolk Southern railroad track. The park is set aside as a dedicated area for nature study, photography, and hiking and maintained by the Trustees of New Castle Common.

The trail contains a section of a cross country running course and connects the Hermitage Natural Area parking lot to the Jack Markell Trail. One section of the trail has been damaged by off-road vehicles and requires crossing some deep wet ruts using a plank bridge which has no hand rails. Other than that section the path is wide and easy to walk.
