The Great Allegheny Passage was once called the Yough River Trail. This section of trail features a unique geologic feature called a tufa. Rainwater percolates down through decaying vegetation and forms a stream that picks up carbonic aci. The acidic water dissolves the underlying limestone which then separates out a bit farther downstream as tufa, coating everything it comes in contact with.
