Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve encompasses approximately 200 acres along the Congaree River opposite of Congaree National Park. Ranging in elevation from around 90 feet in elevation along the river, to over 250 feet in the higher sections. Along the trail you will begin in a longleaf pine forest undergoing restoration. This short and scenic route travels along the banks of Bates Old River which was formerly a channel off of the Congaree River. There is a paddle put-in access located here as well for those who want to explore the area via water. It is common to see a diversity of animal and plant species in this area including bald eagles, osprey, alligators, deer, and more.

This trail gets washed out from flooding rivers and experiences blow-down regularly. The Kingsnake Trail explores a remote part of Congaree National Park. The trail offers excellent birdwatching, and hikers may spot deer, raccoons, opossums, and even bobcat tracks. Midway, the trail passes a large cypress-tupelo slough that seems to go on forever. On the other side of the trail, giant cherrybark oaks stand at near-record size.
