The 463-acre Purgatory Creek Natural Area is within the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone. The land is home to Purgatory Creek and includes upland meadows, canyon bluffs of 40 feet or more, dense juniper thickets, champion oaks, and a flood control dam. The trails are well-marked and clean, with a variety of terrain along the way.

The trail is well marked but there are some sections that can be tricky and it is suggested to download the offline map to navigate. Shade is provided for the majority of the route and the trail is lined with live oak trees, but there is intermittent sun throughout the way.

Wildlife can be seen from many different locations in the park and may include deer, armadillos, rabbits, and more. For those who wish to extend their route, there are many intersecting trails that lead to Upper Purgatory trails from the end of Dante's Trail.

This flat and relatively easy hike makes for a great family-friendly trail that everyone can enjoy. The route is primarily shaded with many live oak trees and other interesting native plants to observe. The trail can become muddy during wet conditions and waterproof shoes are recommended if traveling after heavy rain.
