From the PA State Game Lands 110 parking lot on Northkill Road proceed up a Game Lands service road past the gate. Bear left off road onto the Sand Springs Trail (blue blazes). Sand Springs Trail crosses Northkill Creek, following a stream up the mountain. At 1.9 miles from parking lot reach a junction with the Tom Lowe Trail beside the rock walled Sand Spring. Great loop when connected with the Sand Spring Trail, solo or with the kids. Connects to the AT via a Sand Spring side trail at the Upper Sand Spring. If you follow the trail from the parking lot (about 20 cars) in a counter-clockwise fashion, the climbs are rather gentle. Plenty of places to stop, look at the streams, hike off-trail along other feeder streams, lots of stream crossings, and several fire rings. This is a nice section of trail that can be done as either a day hike, or an overnighter. This section of trail starts in the town of Port Clinton and runs along the top of the ridge to Rt 183. It is possible to hike this section in a day. Alternatively, it could be done as overnighter. Eagles Nest Shelter sleeps 8 and is located around the halfway point.

This section makes a great weekend trip. There are multiple camp sites, scenic views, and a boulder field to explore. This is really one of the best sections of trail to hike. There are multiple scenic overlooks. There's also a boulder field, a reservoir, plenty of access to water, and multiple campsites.
