A nice, accessible, if suburban, section of the Appalachian Trail. The first section of the trail can be muddy, but there is evidence of ongoing trail maintenance to remedy this. Once you hit the ridge, there are great views for the remaining two miles to Hay Rock, but the footing is tricky and is slower going than the ascent.

This loop of Read Mountain Preserve begins on the Buzzard Rock trail (blue blazes). At the first trail junction, take a left on the Rocky Way trail (yellow blazes) and continue for 1.45 miles (bypassing the Crossover Trail) as you traverse the ridge to the CCC trail (red blazes). Gain the summit ridge on the CCC trail for .82 miles until you reach the junction with Buzzard Rock trail. Here, you can take a quick jaunt to Buzzard Rock. Otherwise, descend via the Buzzard Rock and Crossover Trail...
