The Koelbroek nature reserve is also called the "green lung" of Boekend. The area was formed by an old Maas arm. The traces of the Maasarm can still be seen in the area. The peat and clay soil are habitat for a number of endangered bird species and insects, which live well between the special plants and the water of the Everlose Beek.
