This route starts at Hof Emschermündung, where the Rhine and Emscher meet (although the hike can also be started closer to Dinslaken if that is easier). It follows the Emscher for a while, then turns south and meets the Hoag route, which runs near the Rhine. It then heads north and crosses the north port of Walsum.

The majority of the forest area of this nature reserve consists of old beech and oak forests - some up to 200 years old. On the Rotbach itself there are also remains of erlenau forest and broken forest. The name Rotbach comes from the red sediments; it is a strongly meandering body of water where you can take a relaxed stroll and enjoy the landscape.
