This trail loops around the sports field at Huntley Meadows and starts from the park and ride lot. Accessibility: There is at least 1 designated accessible space in the partially parking lot off of Turnpike Road at the north end of the trail. It does not appear to be van-accessible with a striped access aisle. The trail surface is natural and typically at least 3 feet wide. Begin by following the Appalachian Trail uphill before following the Heyl Trail back to the starting point. The trail is mostly wooded but does cross over a power line clearcut area at one point. At one point you will follow a utility road. Downloading the map ahead of time is helpful for navigating the stretch of the route off of the AT.

This trailhead is easily accessible from Norwich. You will follow the AT over rolling terrain and across a power line clear-cut where there is a nice view. The trail is mostly forested The Happy Hill Shelter is down a short spur trail off of the Appalachian Trail. It is a well-maintained stone and log shelter.

When accessing this trail from the Norwich side, it is recommended you use the roadside parking next to the trailhead on Montshire Road.

The Bill Ballard Trail passes along the "Grand Canyon of Norwich" created by a creek running into Charles Brown Brook. Along the rolling path, you will cross over creeks, bridges, up stone steps, and past old stone walls. There are also some benches that are great spots to stop and snack before continuing on.
