The trail includes a steady incline along with some muddy and rocky areas throughout the year due to water runoff. This route is much more of a forest hike than a scenic hike, but the views of the lakes are spectacular. The hike up to O'Brien Lake is well marked, but the path from O'Brien Lake to Taylor Lake is less so.

Panorama Ridge, while not visible from Taylor Lake, is a great destination for avid hikers. During the last two weeks of September, the large forest of Alpine Larches on the flanks of the Ridge and in the meadows below the ridge are spectacular. At all times of the year, the Ridge affords excellent views of the Bow River Valley, Castle Mountain, and the Lake Louise area.

While most of the year the trails are in good condition, planning on the route being muddy in lots of spots is recommended. The closer to the lake that you get, the trails will often get really muddy and quite wet, so wearing waterproof gear is helpful. Taylor Lake is pretty, and fall is a nice time to come to see both snow on the further mountains and larches changing colours. The ascent usually takes between two to three hours. The parking lot is located off Highway 1 between Banff and Lake Louise, past Castle Junction. The Moraine Lake Shoreline Trail is an easy and family-friendly trail featuring gorgeous views of the bright blue water of the iconic Moraine Lake and snow capped mountain peaks all around. Canoes can be rented for use on the lake, with the best time to visit is in July or August because snow and ice can remain on the lake and trail through May or early June.
