Samworth Wildlife Management Area was a gift to the sportsmen of South Carolina from Thomas G. Samworth. Originally 500 acres in 1962, Samworth WMA has increased to 1,588 acres through state acquisitions (1963-1966) and North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant acquisitions (1996). Currently, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources manages about 1,300 acres of wetland impoundments, 200 acres of uplands and agricultural fields and 88 acres of longleaf pine. Due to environmental impacts, this trailhead can only be accessed by boat. There are multiple boat landings on the island but the beginning of this trail starts off of the boat landing on Thoroughfare Creek.

Brookgreen Gardens is part botanical garden, part zoo, and part outdoor art museum. The expansive botanical gardens have beautiful sculptures around every corner. You will see many different types of sculptures ranging from nymphs to animals. Brookgreen Gardens also has a zoo with animals that are native to the Lowcountry like owls, alligators, river otters and turkeys.
