Northern Lights Village

EuroVelo routes are long-distance cycling routes that pass through European countries. An EuroVelo route must be at least 1000 kilometers long and run through at least two different countries. EuroVelo 13 is known as the Iron Curtain Trail, and it runs from the border of Norway and Russia in the north to the Black Sea coast on the border between Bulgaria and Turkey, following the Cold War-era "Iron Curtain" along the border.

Kaunispää is an easy peak to conquer. It is easy to get there on foot, or even by ski lift or car. At the top you will find an observation tower and a restaurant. The return journey of this route detours back to a slightly different route to give variety, but you can return from the top to the starting point using the same route as you went up.

Saariselkä has an extensive and varied network of cross-country trails. Some of the trails are lit, and some of the trails run through the wilderness of Urho Kekkonen National Park. The first snow track is illuminated and will be opened at the turn of October-November when snow can be made with a cannon. The maintenance of Saariselkä trails is carried out according to the same schedule every year. Open trails are serviced every day.

Urho Kekkonen National Park is right next to Saariselkä. Here you can find open fell wilderness, clear rivers, forest nature, and even Santa's home, Korvatunturi. The Taajoslaavu route can be traveled all year round. In summer, the route can be hiked or mountain biked, in winter it is a maintained cross-country skiing route.
