The trailhead is located between Big Pine and May's Prairie. It is a well-marked trail with signs and blazes painted on the trees. There is partial shade most of the way with some sunny and exposed sections. The trail is mostly sand but there are grassy spots that make for easier walking. There is a sign at the trailhead which reads service dogs only.

The scenery along this route changes from live oak forests and hammocks where there’s lots of shade and transitions to open pine scrub. Users recommend bringing bug spray due to the number of bugs present in the warm months. This is a great hike that is unique to most Florida trails due to the elevation gain along the way. The trail can become muddy during wet conditions and waterproof shoes are recommended.
