This first stage of the GR®653: Voie d'Arles - Via Tolosana - Santiago de Compostela connects Arles to Saint-Gilles in the Bouches-du-Rhône. The trail begins in the heart of the magnificent city of Arles near its Arena. The route runs along the road and crosses beautiful cultivated countryside punctuated by salt marshes.

This route from Arles takes you into the Camargue countryside. This circuit takes you through the rice fields and market gardens and ends on the banks of the Vaccarès lake. This pond, the largest in the Camargue, takes its name from the many wild cows that lived there. This wetland in the heart of the Camargue National Nature Reserve hosts many species of birds, including flamingos.

Departing from Arles, this route takes the first kilometers of the pilgrim's path towards Saint-Jacques de Compostelle and reveals many testimonies of agricultural life. This course in the plain reveals the cereal crops and the pastures of the Camargue bulls. You will have the opportunity to discover the last Camargue vineyards and their large estates, against the backdrop of the Alpilles chain.
